Every year, Netroots Nation has a big conference in which they gather a bunch of progressive activists together for training and informational sessions. In the age of the internet, Netroots Nation has become kind of a big deal. This year, they are having a contest to decide who will get a free booth at the conference to promote a cause. American Atheists Inc. is one of the contestants.
Sixteen groups are in the running and three of those groups will get a free booth at the conference. Currently, American Atheists Inc. is winning, but that can change very quickly. Being Liberal is a popular Facebook group and I am sure they will be doing a lot of GOTV promotion over the next few days. Truth be told, my second choice would be Wolf Pack, but American Atheists Inc. has to come first for me.
It is no secret that most atheists are not just liberals, but are downright progressives. So Netroots Nation probably has a large number of atheists who are not active in the greater atheist community. If atheists can have a booth at Netroots Nation, we can make the case for people who are already atheists to get more involved in the atheist community. We can also use the opportunity to partner up with progressive theists who share many of our values.
Progressive radio hosts and bloggers will be at the conference and they too would be exposed to the fact that atheists exist. They might even talk about the American Atheists Inc. booth on their medium of choice. This will get us more supporters and add to our already growing community.
Conservative media will be talking about us too. I can hear Rush Limbaugh now:
“Hey folks, can you believe these lefties. They have an atheist booth at their conference. I told you the Earth was flat, but these clowns believe in science. Oh and this is just more evidence my friends that Obama is a communist, Muslim, atheist, Nazi.”
Then all the closeted Republicans and Libertarians will find out that atheist organizations exist too.
