• The Smoking Gun Evidence For Evolution

Christian evangelist Ray Comfort is at it again. I recently popped in on his Facebook page and noticed that he surprisingly isn’t all that fond of the word, “banana.” That aside, he recently posted a status demanding “extraordinary evidence” for evolution. He clownishly claims that there is no evidence.

The amount of evidence in support of evolution is ridiculous. Pretty much the entire field of biology and many other scientific fields support the theory of evolution. We can even physically observe evolution taking place… in humans. We call it genetics. You know when one parent passes on a trait to an offspring. That shit is evolution at work. Now when some of those traits help a creature to survive and that trait becomes a dominant trait in the species, we call that natural selection.

The thing is that most fundamentalist Christians like Comfort might even admit to accepting this. What they will continue to be in denial about is what they call “Macro-Evolution.” That’s a made up term they use to reject the science that species can evolved into other species. This is really what they have an issue with because the Bible says that God made man in his present form and then made woman from man’s rib. Of course that would mean that women would have an extra rib bone and as a point of fact, they don’t.

In any case, Comfort demands a smoking gun evidence in support of evolution. So here it is. It is really simple and pretty much air tight. If you look at chromosome 2 in chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans there are two telomeres. Humans have the same two telomeres except that ours are noticeably and obviously fused together. That is the smoking gun evidence to shows that humans evolved from common descent. This graphic shows it much better:

That is extraordinary evidence! Of course there is a great deal of other evidence too, but I think this is the single most compelling piece of evidence if I could only give one argument. I’m sure an actual biologist could rattle off a ton of examples and arguments in favor of evolution so I would encourage Christians like Comfort (who deny evolution) to ask a reputable biologist or evolutionary biologist for more information
