For some strange reason, I still get blindsided by Oprah’s choice to remain ignorant despite the fact that she promotes the likes of “The Secret” and Deepak Chakra. In some cases ignorance actually is a choice and in an interview with endurance swimmer and atheist Diana Nyad, Oprah made that choice.

I’ve been an atheist activist for a long time now and I want to tell you why. It isn’t just because I lack a belief in deities; it is because I have realized that belief in deities has and continues to impede human progress – not just technologically, but morally.
One thing about religion that I always found damning is the way religion has warped the minds of parents when their children leave the faith. More than anything else, this speaks volumes about the cruelty of religion. That is why I think it is important to tell these stories so that others can bear witness to them.
Last night Richard Dawkins was on the Daily Show and has once again demonstrated why I am not a fan of his television appearances in America. Maybe he does better with a British audience, I don’t know, but when it comes to American audiences, he just doesn’t do a good job.
What or who was instrumental in your de-conversion? This to me is an interesting question for a few reasons. First, I’m fascinated by why people believe what they believe and why or how they lose those beliefs. Second, knowing what was instrumental in people’s de-conversion could help in de-converting others. Third, I have no real frame of reference for this question.
A new movie trailer for a Christian movie has hit the YouTube. The movie is called, “God Is Not Dead,” and it stars Kevin Sorbo. As an aside, I am a Sorbo fan. He was after all the star of Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda which had one and a half awesome seasons before turning to utter crap. Earlier this year, Sorbo was at the Philadelphia Wizard World convention. I noticed his line of completely empty and I thought about go going over to talk to him. Had I known about this film in June, I absolutely would have.
The best atheist interview on TV was pulled off the internet awhile back. To my knowledge only one copy was left in existence. At the Reason Rally, I asked the one person I knew would have it if I could get a personal copy of it to put up on the web.
Sadly there is more drama within the atheist community. Last night, Lee Moore of A-News published a report of voter fraud within the now Secular Party of America. Over the summer, the National Atheist Party (NAP) took a vote to change their name and that vote was allegedly fixed.
There are a lot of great books written by atheist authors over the past few years. While I can’t say that reading any one particular book was the key to my own de-conversion from Judaism to atheism, I have heard from a lot of fellow atheists about how this book or that really got them thinking critically about religion and lead to their de-conversion. None of those books are going to be on my list.
September 13th through the 15th is the PA State Atheist/Humanist Conference! Tickets are still available, but they are going fast and there is only a very limited number of tickets at the door. This is the second year of this conference and this year it is in Philadelphia.
