• Christians Believe You Are Saved By Chance

I love it when Christians claim that atheists believe that we are the result of random chance. It is at best an oversimplification of evolution via natural selection. But let’s turn it around a little. While Christians are unlikely to admit it, it makes just as much sense to point out that they believe that people are saved by chance alone.

I know Christians like to say that they are saved by grace and not chance, but that just isn’t true. It is mere chance that they were born in a society that if not predominantly Christians, has at least a strong Christian community. Truth be told, if you are a Christian in America, then you are absolutely luck because 80% of the country agrees with you and much of our society reinforces that belief.

You could have been born in China to Chinese parents and if that were the case, you probably would be a practicing Buddhist. As a matter of chance however, you weren’t born in China. Still, even if you were, China now has a Christian community too. As a matter of chance, you were born at a time when the United Nations puts a great deal of pressure on nations of the world to allow people the freedom to believe in different religions.

Imagine if you will, you were born in Africa in the 1100s. You almost certainly wouldn’t be a Christian. But as a matter of chance and chance alone, you were born in the 20th or 21st century where globalism is taking place and people are open to the idea of freedom of conscience in matters of religious belief. In fact, you were probably born in a country that is predominantly Christian as it is. As a result, you are Christian and almost certainly believe that you were saved by grace. But the reality is that you really believe that you were saved by chance and chance alone.

Of course, I would argue that you aren’t saved at all and that there is nothing that you need saving from in the first place. But that is neither here nor there. The point is that your beliefs aren’t based on grace, but are based on chance. It is just random chance that you were born in a society that is predominantly Christian at a time in which governments of the world have affirmed the basic right to freedom of conscience.

    Just something to think about.
