The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) announced that they will be distributing atheist literature, May 2nd, in Orange County Florida public schools.
Basically, eleven schools are allowing religious organizations to come in and promote their beliefs to students for the “National Day of Prayer”. This is plainly illegal unless all religions and non-religions are allowed to participate. The schools in Orange County have apparently learned something from nearby Collier County who recently settled out of court on a similar lawsuit.
What’s truly hilarious is that the school has stipulated that they vet the atheist materials. They have decided to censor books by Sam Harris, Robert Ingersoll, and others. Many of the standard FFRF fliers have also been censored. Other materials by the FFRF are not being censored.
What’s funny about is it that the school isn’t censoring the Bible itself (which will be handed out also). Considering the material in the Bible, it’s quite funny. Talk about violence, sex, murder, etc.
Anyway, this is a good thing. It’s a good start and if it gets kids to see that there even is another side, then it’s a good thing. I’m sure that the religious will be up in arms about it. Too bad. If your religion can’t stand on its own in even an unfair match-up, then why are you following it?
I wonder if the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster will have a table?
