• Texas Schools Teaching Creationism

Here’s a new article, thanks to a lot of people for pointing out to me.

I have a few issues with the presentation.  First it make it sound like every school in the entire state is teaching base creationism and racism.  That’s not true… only a few.  According to the research, 57 school districts (57 too many) are teaching a Bible and Religion course (which is an elective that is option for students and school districts.  There are 1,265 school districts in Texas.  So less than 5% (still too many though).

Despite the vagueness of the law that allows the teaching of Bible courses in the school district:

Despite the state’s failure to implement HB 1287 effectively, a number of school districts did succeed in offering Bible courses that largely comply with legal and constitutional requirements, are academically serious and avoid many of the serious problems noted in most other districts. These successful courses can be found in urban, suburban and rural districts.

What’s more sad, is that so many people are using this as an excuse to bash Texas.  “Please secede. The IQ off the nation will increase.” And other similar comments.  These comments are just as bigoted as the poor instruction that exists in some schools.

And honestly, it doesn’t help those of us who live in Texas and love our state in spite of its flaws.  When the persecution complex of the majority is high like it is with many Christians in positions of power, it makes it doubly hard to do anything as an atheist or anything to support a non-theocratic agenda.  So, lay off.

If you have specific complaints about specific people, then fine.  Go for it.  General complaints against everyone in the entire state are useless.
