Thomas Jefferson famously cut up a Bible to get rid of the junk, the impossible, the immoral, and the flat out wrong. He had 9000 copies printed and given freely to congressmen for the next 50 years.
The American Humanist Association has done a 21st century version. But they have also done the same thing to Hebrew Bible, the Qur’an, the Bhagavadgîtâ, the Buddhist Sutras, and the Book of Mormon. Finally, they put in some of the removed material for comparison’s sake.
The printed book and e-books will be given to President Obama and the 113th congress. Everyone else can get the book here.
Personally, I think it’s a good idea to extract the useful lessons from these types of texts. But with the mania from the Tea Party, I can see this becoming a major blow up.
