I got a hilarious comment from a Christian recently. He claimed that atheism has been proven to be wrong. I didn’t know whether my gut was going to explode from laughter or my head was going to explode from his ignorance and stupidity.
I hate when people complain that my complaints about religion (or anything else) is a “first world problem.” Do you know why? Because I fucking live in the first world!
Jamaica is a lot like the US as far as religious demographics are concerned… well sort of. About 65% of the country is Christian and about 20% have no religious affiliation. America has about 80% Christian and 20% with no religious affiliation. So who makes up the additional 15% in Jamaica? Jews, Muslim, Rastafarians, and closeted Obeahs. That last one is really pissing off the Christians.
One aspect of religion I just don’t get is this desire or need for an afterlife. Oddly enough this is probably one of the aspects that attract so many people to religion in the first place.
A while ago, I heard about a planned manned mission to Mars… or at least Mars orbit. This is sort of cool, but it’s mostly lame. It’s like climbing the highest mountain and then suddenly stopping right before you reach the peak, turning around, and going home. Without stepping foot on the surface of Mars, the trip is just a waste of time, money, and resources.
Since at least 1998, I have been boycotting Chick-Fi-A. I know some people just found out recently that they hate gays and are massively fundamentalist Christian, but this has been kind of there thing for a long time.
Last week, Author Reza Aslan appeared on Fox News to promote his new book, “Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth.” In the interview, Fox News embarrassed themselves by fixating on the fact that Aslan is a Muslim. Aslan capitalized on this by pretending to be an objective scholar. Yesterday, Aslan appeared on The Young Turks for an interview and it was he who should be embarrassed:
While most people today don’t believe Hercules was actually born of a virgin or was half god, there is universal agreement among Zeus-worshiping scholars that there was a real historic Hercules. In fact, only those who have an anti-Zeus bias reject the historicity of Hercules.
Recently, the news has been abuzz about former Congressman and possibly future NYC Mayor Anthony Weiner’s latest sex photo scandal. For me, this is really a non-issue and I have my lack of belief in deities to thank for it.
I know many Christians are keen on the whole “Good News” thing, but I have a little bit more of a harsh reality that I would like to share. Not to worry though, because there is good news with this harsh reality too. In fact, there is a lot of good news.
