On Tuesday March 25th, CNN aired a special on atheism in America. After watching the special, I had some mixed thoughts but over-all, it was a step forward.
I was listening to my local NPR station the other day and came across an interesting story. Artists created a mural in Philadelphia and surprise, surprise, Christians were offended and destroyed the mural because that’s what people do when they are offended.
Christian fundamentalists often complain that “secularists” are trying to “redefine” marriage to include the greater LBGT community. Former Senator, presidential dreamer, and all around assclown, Rick Santorum (Google him), even complained that we might redefine marriage to include “man on dog” relations. Interestingly enough, it seems that lately it has been Christians who have been trying to redefine marriage.
Catholic League President, Bill Donohue just came out with a new book called, “The Catholic Advantage: Why Health, Happiness, and Heaven Await the Faithful.” In it, he references me by name and of course in typical Donohue form, plays rather loosely with the facts and with reality.
In May of 2014, two 12-year-old girls stabbed their friend 19 times and left her for dead. Last week, police released their interrogation tapes taken shortly after the incident. Why did these two girls nearly murder their friend? Because they feared that if they didn’t, Slender Man would kill them and their families.
Religious believers often tell me that atheism is my religion and even some atheists claim that they would not want religion eliminated because atheism is their identity and without religion to argue against they would lose that identity. Is atheism my religion and my identity? Wouldn’t I want to stop the elimination of religion to preserve my identity?
One of the most disturbing things about the Chapel Hill shooting is that the shooter, Craig Hicks, is an active atheist online. His Facebook page looks a lot like my Facebook page… minus the photo of the weight of his gun. We even have 77 Facebook friends in common.
