The world has been in quarantine for months as millions of people continue to die from COVID-19. And where is God? In Heaven washing his tights? If you are a religious believer, this must be terrible for you. Religious places of worship are shut down. These businesses (and they are businesses) are petitioning governments to label them “essential” so they can reopen. But why? Isn’t God everywhere?
The fact is that religions are businesses and they need your money. Religions aren’t about worship. The Bible even says that you can worship in your closet and that one shouldn’t worship in public (Matthew 6:6). But worshipping in closets don’t pay religious leaders’ bills, private jets, and whatever. Churches are businesses my friends.
Meanwhile, the theodicy question continues to loom large. God, where is he? One would think God would care that churches are losing their money and closing their doors. One would think that God would spare his followers from the dreaded virus. But nope, religious believer get sick and die at the same rate as none religious believers… maybe even more so since many of the really fervent believers reject the medical call for quarantine and use of masks. Some even hilariously claim to be “bathed in the blood of Christ.”
Does God not see what is happening here on Earth? Does he not care? Worse, if he does exist, he is up there in Heaven watching as millions of people die horribly while he could do something but chooses not to do that thing. Could you imagine, standing by and watching someone you love die horribly knowing that you have the cure to their disease, but nah, you’re not going to share it. You’re just going to stand by and watch. That seems monstrous to me and yet billions of people choose to worship this imaginary monster.
Oh, but the plan… That’s right, God has a plan and that plan calls for millions of people to die horribly. Call me crazy, but that sounds like a horrible plan. Maybe if God were real, he could come up with a better plan. One that didn’t involve watching millions of people around the world die horribly from a pandemic. Hey God! Maybe put on your thinking cap and come up with a better plan.
People are dying and one religious person told me that it was for the best because the dead person is in a better place. Wow! So it was really luck that someone died horribly, gasping for breath? I take issue with that kind of “love” too. It just seems super cruel. But that is what religion does. It twists reality in the minds of the believer. They think they are being nice when they are actually being super cruel.
COVID-19 exposes this cruelty. The fact that religious institutions are forced to close their doors because of the Corona Quarantine exposes the business side of these institutions, the monstrous nature of their imaginary deity, and the unintentional cruelty of religious believers. One thing is absolutely certain, if and when a vaccine or treatment for the Corona Virus is developed, it will come from a scientist in a lab and not from priest in a church.
