In September the Alianza Pro Transgénicos (APT—Pro GMO Alliance) was created in Mexico; it seeks to promote research and development of GMO seeds.
Not even a month after that, the president and vice president of the APT received a parcel bomb each:
“The aim of these attacks, which wounded the vice president, Mario Valdés Berlanga, was to intimidate the movement that promotes the release of permits of Genetically Modified Organisms crops as a solution to the Mexican countryside”, said the president Rubén Chávez Villagrán.
At a press conference, they stated that on Thursday November 19, Eng. Mario Valdés Berlanga, corn producer and vice president of APT, and an assistant were injured when opening a parcel bomb sent to the former. “Fortunately, the two wounded and two others who were in the same room where the device was opened are safe and in good health”, he said.
A second parcel bomb was received on November 20, addressed to Eng. Rubén Chávez Villagrán, president of Alianza Pro Transgénicos. This package was not opened and was instead delivered to the competent authorities along with a criminal complaint against those responsible for these criminal acts.
The group Por la Anarquía (For Anarchy) claimed responsibility for the attacks in a patchwork quilt that echoes profoundly ignorant and terribly unscientific memes — I wish these people could have access to a proper education.
It is also not surprising. Spanish scientist JM Mulet already dealt with death threats in Argentina earlier this year and it is only a matter of time before someone ends up dead. We know fundamentalists try to impose through violence because reasoning too hard for them.
