It’s A Different World
I used to live in a world where music, movie, book, and art critics reigned supreme. Their words mattered. It used to be a world where published journalists and advertisers had the final say; they influenced opinion, and it mattered. But now? The information superhighway does not discriminate. As long as we’re willing to do the same job for free (and most of us — and by most, meaning me and others like me — are), there is music to sample, articles to peruse, books to skim, and everything for free for download if you’re willing to break the law (I’m not). But the playing field has leveled. Just as in politics it has become impossible to tackle the powers that be, in terms of information, we finally have equality. All it takes to get recognition is having something to say, and saying it in such a way that gets comprehension and attention.
Not only is this important for all of the professions named above, but it’s important for activists. Remember that if you have something of interest to say, people will and do listen. And occasionally, they even change their minds.
