• Egyptian Police Forms Task Force to Hunt Down Atheists

I will never understand atheists who have a good word for Islam. All of the countries in the world that punish atheism by death or imprisonment are Islamic, and in Islamic countries that are not so barbaric, there is no shortage of voices that they should be. The latest news of Islamic harassment of unbelievers comes from Egypt, where the ouster of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood from power has not lead to any improvement in the status of the minority unbelievers.

The talk show, “Redline,” aired on Honest satellite channel and hosted by Mohamed Moussa, discussed the issue of atheism in Egypt in detail. Moussa also interviewed Alexandrian activist Mostafa Zakareya, who says he is an atheist.

In his show, Moussa said that atheism is a foreign plot at a critical time for Egypt, as the country continues to experience political, economic and social instability.

“I will continue to air the reactions of those atheists I talked about because we have nothing to fear from, and because we will continue our war against such destructive ideas,” Moussa claimed.

Allah be praised! Such valor! He is not “afraid of” the tiniest minority, staying out of daylight to save their lives!

During the episode, Zakareya said he was keen not to “insult religions,” refusing to voice criticism against Islam, adding that the only thing he strives for is acceptance amongst Egyptians as an atheist.

Well, good luck with that! And I don’t really see why a religion that calls those who disagree with it “cattle” should not be criticized. Incidentally, Zakareya’s mild tone is not convincing many that his lack of belief is not a danger to the society.

Moussa called for Zakareya to be arrested and executed on account of him being atheist.

Responding to Zakareya’s comments, Sheikh Gomaa Mohamed Ali said that atheism is a “new phenomenon” that is not associated with any religion.

Lol! Atheism is not associated with any religion! And I guess alcohol abstinence is not necessarily associated with drinking any spirits, either. As for atheism being “new” in the Arab world, well, the good Sheikh may want to look up Abu-Ala-Al-Ma’arri. But the Sheikh also knows whose nefarious plot atheism is:

“Atheism was coined by the Zionists,” Ali claimed.

Paging His Excellency Admiral General Aladeen!

And of course, not all those who demand arrest and possible death for atheists are regular citizens.

A special police taskforce will be formed to arrest a group of Alexandria-based atheists who declared their beliefs on Facebook, announced Alexandria Security Directorate chief Amin Ezz El-Din in a televised telephone interview.

Ezz El-Din said that the taskforce will be formed by police officers specialized in working on such”crimes”, and that they will “legalize” arrest procedures against contentious activists.

Obviously the concept of “thought crimes” is very much alive and well where Islam rules.

But the news story saves the best bit for last:

Article 64 of Egypt’s recently-passed Constitution stipulates, “Freedom of religion is absolute.”

    LMAO.

I was raised in the Islamic world. By accident of history, the plague that is entanglement of religion and government affects most Muslim majority nations a lot worse the many Christian majority (or post-Christian majority) nations. Hence, I am quite familiar with this plague. I started doubting the faith I was raised in during my teen years. After becoming familiar with the works of enlightenment philosophers, I identified myself as a deist. But it was not until a long time later, after I learned about evolutionary science, that I came to identify myself as an atheist. And only then, I came to know the religious right in the US. No need to say, that made me much more passionate about what I believe in and what I stand for. Read more...
