• Scientific illiteracy no hindrance to Republican star’s meteoric rise

Really, Republicans, this is the best you can come up with?

I must admit that I take no pleasure in going back to pointing out Michael Shermer’s error in equating hostility toward science on the political Left to the political Right. For better or for worse, Republicans just won’t stop proving to us that they are actually worse.

    Meet Marco Rubio.

The senator from Florida, christened the “Republican Savior” by the Time magazine, has certainly seen his political fortunes rise drastically over the last few months, and likely will be a presidential candidate in 2016.

And this is what he thinks about climate science.

“I know people said there’s a significant scientific consensus on that issue, but I’ve actually seen reasonable debate on that principle,” Rubio said.

“Reasonable debate”? You mean like this?

    Or maybe like this?

(Kudos to Huffington Post, they checked some source from actual scientists and did not uncritically cover Rubio’s statements. It doesn’t happen in the media very often.)

Look, Marco, it has come to the point that even those scientists paid specifically to cast doubt on uncertainty over climate science can no longer deny reality. Of course, this is not the first time in so many months that the senator displays scientific ignorance. He said last November that “the age of the Earth was a great mystery” before backtracking and acknowledging scientific consensus.

Are you convinced yet, Mr. Shermer?

Hence, I am quite familiar with this plague. I started doubting the faith I was raised in during my teen years. After becoming familiar with the works of enlightenment philosophers, I identified myself as a deist. But it was not until a long time later, after I learned about evolutionary science, that I came to identify myself as an atheist. And only then, I came to know the religious right in the US. No need to say, that made me much more passionate about what I believe in and what I stand for. Read more...
