• More religious assholes trivialize mass murder of children in service of theocracy

    As I wrote my earlier post today about about the religious right exploiting the Connecticut tragedy to demand universal acceptance of their doctrines, I know that we hadn’t heard the last of it. Lo and behold, the barrage of offensive remarks continues. Here is former Arkansas governor and Fox “News” contributor, Mike Huckabee.

    So governor, how do we know that god is there in the form of hugs and therapy, but not in the form of the shooter? If you constantly keep telling us that god “acts in mysterious ways”, then how can you possibly know what to attribute to god and what not to attribute to god?

    Creationist Eric Hovind tweeted basically the same thing.

    So far we’ve got Deace, Fischer, Huckabee, Hovind. And likely more revolting ghouls to follow.

    I was raised in the Islamic world. By accident of history, the plague that is entanglement of religion and government affects most Muslim majority nations a lot worse the many Christian majority (or post-Christian majority) nations. Hence, I am quite familiar with this plague. I started doubting the faith I was raised in during my teen years. After becoming familiar with the works of enlightenment philosophers, I identified myself as a deist. But it was not until a long time later, after I learned about evolutionary science, that I came to identify myself as an atheist. And only then, I came to know the religious right in the US.
