• Ritual animal slaughter nixed in Poland

I’ve always found animal sacrifice to be barbaric, cruel, and… well… gross. The fact people perform these acts in the 21 century is perplexing. Gruesome photos of blood covered asphalt is something I simply can’t understand.

So, it was with interest that I read this:

A top court in Poland said Tuesday that the ritual slaughter of animals by religious groups, including Jews and Muslims, violates the country’s constitution and animal protection laws.

It’s about time. But there could be some trouble.

The ruling puts it in conflict with European Union rules that allow the practice on the grounds of religious freedom.

I guess the ruling has something to do with slitting the animal’s throat and bled to death without the benefit of pre-slitting stunning.

It appears as though other European nations are discussing this matter as well.

In a similar dispute in the Netherlands, the lower house of parliament approved a ban last year. Animal rights groups and a large anti-Islam political party – and a majority of Dutch voters – supported the bill. But after an outcry that the ban would violate religious freedoms, support evaporated when the bill was sent to the upper house.
