• On the kindness of an atheist

Recently, in a post on evolution, reviewing the book “Your Inner Fish” by Neil Shubin, there was some talk about what the best book to get out of Shubin’s, Jerry Coyne’s “Why Evolution is True” and Prothero’s “Evolution: What the Fossils Say and Why it Matters”. I was asking which would be the best one to get to learn new stuff, given that I already have a fairly good layman’s understanding. Russ Rogers, a commenter here and at Debunking Christianity where I have blogged,  said, “Johno, Pick one you want to read, message me on FB with a mailing address, and I will make a gift of it to you in support of your blogging.”

Now, straight off the bat, that is exceptionally kind. Russ knows I live in another country altogether. Nut it did not end there, Russ messaged me to say he had included a little something for my boys and my partner. I have twin toddlers, two year-olds about whom I post videos on facebook. Russ has seen pictures and videos of them and took it upon himself to make some absolutely stunning pieces of creativity. From jigsaws of their names within animals, to a boxed jigsawed picture of us all, to a set of tongs and a mystery item (yet to be deciphered), it was a veritable box of delights.

Here are some pictures of what he made and sent all the way from the States. I can’t begin to say how thankful and awe-struck that somebody would think to do that. Good man, is Russ.

He’s going straight to hell, but he’s a good man nonetheless.
