• Buffy the Vaccine-Denialism Slayer

Actress extraordinaire Sarah Michelle Geller, most well-known to geeks around the world as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is taking on a new foe: vaccine deniers. In a recent interview, she express her support for the Sounds of Pertussis campaign to raise awareness of why vaccinations for whooping cough are crucial for both adults and children.

Geller, a mother of two, had this to say about the standard schedule of vaccines:

CBS: Did you vaccinate your kids with all the recommended childhood immunizations?

SMG: “Yes, I made the decision to vaccinate my children at a schedule that I agreed upon with my pediatrician. I can only speak in depth on the pertussis vaccine. And I can tell you that all of us have had the vaccine and none of us have had any symptoms related to anything.”

Geller coming out and publicly agreeing with what all the scientific evidence shows (that standard vaccine schedules are safe and effective) is absolutely fantastic. Too often in the area of health, celebrities make headlines for denying scientific consensus and recommending dangerous things like not vaccinating children. I hope that Geller and other like-minded celebrities will continue to speak up and support public health.
