• Does the Bible have authority over the Constitution?

Presidential candidate Ben Carson was asked this earlier today on Meet the Press.

He muffed his answer while evading the substantive thrust of the question. Here is what I would have loved to hear any candidate say:

The Bible does not have authority over the Constitution, neither does the Constitution have authority over the Bible. The Constitution guides the political life of all Americans—people of all faiths and none—whereas our holy books exist to guide the spiritual lives of individuals and communities of faith. There is no need to try to elevate one of these approaches over another, so long as the First Amendment stands to protect our spiritual practices from our political process, and vice-versa.

    Better luck next time.
