Via Godless Engineer we have a (somewhat sweary) account of a small town that used public money and public schoolchildren to construct a large sign reading “Jesus Welcomes You to Hawkins” which is now prominently posted on city property. FFRF is on the case, explaining to the city council how they have overstepped their constitutional bounds.
The usual case law is cited and explained, but my favorite part of the letter is where the FFRF invites the Hawkins City Council to try to imagine themselves as members of a religious minority, living in a city that puts up a sign welcoming everyone in the name of Mohammed. The great irony here, of course, is that anyone whose guiding moral polestar is truly “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” should have already gone through that mental exercise when considering whether to post the sign in the first place.
