Some people are going to be predictably upset about having an openly secular woman speaking at a politically conservative conference, but I’m all for it. Why talk to a roomful of people who already agree with you (as Bey did here at FreeOK) when you can talk to a roomful of people who disagree with you on something substantively important and are therefore in a position to have their minds opened, at least a wee bit?
I’ve no idea just how conservative Jamila really is, but I do know a handful of atheists and skeptics who identify as conservative, and more than a few self-identified conservatives who do not believe religion is central to their conception of conservatism. While I do not personally identify as either conservative or progressive, I hold open the possibility that either side may yet be proven correct on various social or economic issues, and I stand against those who demand stricter political purity tests within freethought as a movement.
