The U.S. and China are notable outliers here, but the general trend is towards the acceptance of secular morality as the overall level of wealth increases. I’d be interested in hearing any theories on why this correlation exists. Is there something about having wealth that allows people to become more secular over time? Do liberal democracies tend to produce secularity and wealth in tandem? Is wealth really the driving factor here? Should we try to directly measure average levels of individual economic security or education, instead? Something else?
