There are unfortunately many nations which punish homosexuality. One such nation is Cameroon where homosexuality is punishable up to five years in prison. Two men have just spent a year in prison after been convicted under these archaic laws. Their crime? Were they in a committed homosexual relationship? No. Were they caught having sex with each other? No. Were they even caught kissing or holding hands? No. So what was this reprehensible homosexual act which deserved 5 years in prison? Buying Bailey’s Irish Cream in a bar and “looking gay”. Luckily somebody within Cameron’s court had a modicum of sense and acquitted the two men, but not until after they had spent a year in prison where they were subjected to abuse from prison guards and fellow inmates. Unfortunately, another prisoner’s 5 year sentence was upheld. His crime? Sending a text message to another man saying “I love you”. So the religions that preach love send a man to prison for expressing love. Anyways, I am not going to discuss the ludicrousness of these sentences as they are quite obvious to anyone who has a couple of brain cells. Unfortunately the only way to stop governments from having such barbaric legislation is through international pressure, but when we don’t even treat homosexuals as equal citizens in our own nations equally then there is not much chance of that.
